A Message to the Members
By Ben Sheridan, CEO
At Capitol View Credit Union, your safety—financial and personal—is our top priority. Unfortunately, fraud is on the rise across Iowa, and scammers are getting more sophisticated. That’s why we want to make sure you know how to recognize and avoid common fraud attempts.
We’ve seen an increase in these types of fraud:
- AI voice cloning scams, where fraudsters impersonate family members, businesses and financial institutions over the phone to request money.
- Romance scams often target members through social media or dating apps.
- Phishing emails and texts, most recently appearing to come from PayPal, are tricking people into clicking malicious links or giving away personal information.
- Toll fraud texts – these look like notices about unpaid tolls, complete with links to “pay now,” but they’re fake, and clicking could compromise your device or financial information.
Here’s how to stay safe:
- Don’t trust caller ID or unknown texts—verify before you respond.
- Never send money or personal info to someone you don’t know well.
- Avoid clicking links in unsolicited messages, even if they seem urgent.
If something feels off, trust your instincts and call us right away. We’re here to help.
